Beef Basics Workshop, Two Days

Friday, July 7th and and Saturday, July 8th Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) will host Beef Basics, a series of hands-on clinics for novice and experienced cattle farmers. In addition, on Saturday Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District and MCHT are co-presenting for the second year, a day-long series of workshops on pasture management for anyone with grazing animals. Clinics and workshops will be held each day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at Aldermere, a saltwater farm preserve located at 20 Russell Avenue in Rockport, Maine.
Begun 14 years ago to support new Belted Galloway owners, the seminar offers hands-on training programs focused on different aspects of care for various types of cattle. Participants may choose from a selection of one-day and two-day clinics, ranging from $20 to $50 per clinic. The fee is half price for each additional registrant from the same farm.
Featured guest presenter, Kirk Stierwalt, will lead a two-day fitting clinic with hands-on demonstrations of how to clip and show cattle. Stierwalt has decades of experience working with show cattle and has held demonstrations across the United States and Canada. A two-day, hands-on Artificial Insemination Certification course will run Friday through Saturday. The Saturday Pasture Management workshops include “Pasture Renovation for Improved Forage” with Rick Kersbergen (UMaine Cooperative Extension Sustainable Dairy and Forage Systems Specialist) and “Pasture Measurements and Biomonitoring” with Diane Schivera (MOFGA Organic Livestock Specialist). Free lunch will be provided for participants on both days.
