Home School Farm Hands Program
Although there have been a number of home schooled students in programs at the Farm, this last fall the Aldermere staff decided to run a Farm Hands program specifically designed for students who are taught through a home school curriculum. The students learned about halter training the calves, working with show heifers, feeding the animals, and about many agricultural and conservation related issues.
There was a good range in the student’s ages and abilities, which allowed the instructors to teach both basic and advanced techniques. The time of the program was also extended, allowing participants to stay a little longer each day than has been allowed for many of the after school programs, so that the students were not rushed and felt more comfortable doing the tasks.
This program filled up quickly and there were enough people on a waiting list to fill at least three more classes. It was a joy to work with the home schooled children, and the Farm will definitely run more programs for them in
the future.
