A Look Back at 2007

This time of the year the Farm staff takes time to reflect on the activities of the past year in order to prepare for the activities of the current year. Last year, winter weather seemed to be the only thing that hindered events around the Farm. Otherwise, all events were well attended and blessed with glorious weather, which made for great educational and recreational opportunities. At this time last year, the lack of snow on the full moon sadly meant there was no Moonlight Ski Tour. However, a Track Detective talk and hike took place in February that allowed participants to hike around the property identifying animal tracks in the light snow and soft soils. The syruping season was short and light, but staff and volunteers helped boil up about 8 gallons of maple syrup. The annual poster contest, hosted by Aldermere Farm in support of National Ag Week in March, brought in over 100 posters from students in the five town schools of Hope, Appleton, Lincolnville, Camden, and Rockport. Judges had a very difficult time choosing winners because all the posters were very creative. With the Calf Unveiling Day in May and the farm tours that took place over the spring and summer, many hundreds of people had unprecedented access to the farm, cattle, and working programs. The Farm Hands and 4-H programs continued to be very popular with local youth. 4-Her’s and their animals attended and participated in many fairs and youth events, with many of them placing well and honing their skills. Record sales of hay, beef, retail items, and artwork were recorded last year, which is proof that good hay and all-natural beef are truly needed commodities in this area and that Beltie items are still highly sought after. Volunteers were once again one the most highly prized assets and the Farm staff thanks all those people who contributed their time last year. We couldn’t do it without you!
