Autumn and Your Food

This fall, Aldermere will host two events for the community, which offer opportunities to learn alternative ways of raising food, taste local foods, and learn more about local farms. On October 18th at 10 a.m., Diane Schivera of Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association (MOFGA) will talk about pastured poultry. This presentation will show how to raise chickens on fresh, green pasture. Animals grown in such a way are known to be of higher quality and better flavor. Diane Schivera has worked at MOFGA for more than ten years as an organic livestock specialist. Another program on food will be an “Eat Local” event on Hearty Soups and Bread. On Sunday, November 2nd beginning at 2 p.m., Nadine Reimer from the Knox-Lincoln Extension Service will give instruction on cooking up some great fall soups using local ingredients. Participants will join Nadine in the kitchen at the Penobscot Bay YMCA and then sit down to sample the finished products. A discussion will take place about the farms and markets where products are available. Nadine is an extension educator in the Waldoboro office. These events are free, but preregistration is required. Call the Aldermere Farm office at 236-2739 or email jjardine@mcht.org to reserve a spot for you and your family.
