Community Gardens at the Erickson Fields Preserve

Last fall, Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Aldermere Farm staff began planning activities for the Erickson Fields Preserve on Route 90 to consider ways to support the Farm operations and to look for ways to benefit the local community. It was a fruitful process and resulted in a decision to continue with haying operations and with pasturing some of Aldermere’s Belted Galloway cattle on the site. Another important decision was to dedicate four acres of the 93-acre Erickson Fields Preserve to community garden initiatives and agriculture education. Community garden plots are currently being built and consist of around 30 mounded raised beds. Most of the beds are already assigned and many are being worked by the Camden-Rockport Parents and Teachers Association who are growing vegetables for the lunch program at the Rockport Elementary School. A few beds are leased to individuals in the community who want to grow food for their families and other beds are being worked by local youth who will donate the resulting produce to food pantries and also to the Camden Hills Regional High School lunch program.
