Knox County Food Council hosts Maine House Reps Pluecker and Geiger

The Knox County Food Council (KCFC) invites the public to a virtual talk with Maine House Representatives Valli D. Geiger (D-Rockland) and Bill Pluecker (I-Warren). This will be an opportunity for attendees to have an open discussion with their local representatives about legislation at the state level to support food security, local food production, land use and water issues in Maine. This public event is free and will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, July 12 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

Rep. Geiger is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives for District 93 (Rockland and Owls Head). She serves on the Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Commerce Committee. She is the former Director of Health Reach’s Hospice program and former Clinical Director for the Federally Qualified Health Centers around the state of Maine and has continued her career in healthcare as a nurse, health policy analyst and health administrator. According to Geiger’s bio on Maine House Democrats’ website, her growing concern about Climate Change and its threat to Maine’s coastal communities led her to earn a Master’s in Sustainable Design in 2014 from Boston Architectural College.

Rep. Pluecker is serving his second term in the Maine House of Representatives for District 95 (Appleton, Hope, east Union, Warren) and is running for reelection. He serves on the Agriculture, Conservation, & Forestry Committee, as well as the Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee. He has also served on the Public Policy Committee for the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association.

For 16 years, Rep. Pluecker and his family operated Hatchet Cove Farm’s CSA in Warren and worked with food shelters in Knox County to provide fresh produce. In January, Rep. Pluecker introduced LD 174 “An Act To Implement the Recommendations of the Ending Hunger by 2030 Advisory Group” which seeks to end food insecurity in Maine. In April, LD 174 received a bipartisan 13-0 recommendation for full funding from the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs.
