Forestry Woods Walk, Logging and Milling Demo

Maren Granstrom of Mid-Maine Forestry and Emilio Codega of Timberdoodle Tree Service will lead an informal, introductory workshop on forestry and sustainable woodlot management from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Erickson Fields Preserve (164 West St, Rockport).

Participants will meet in the Erickson Fields parking lot and walk ~30 minutes to the logging site. Granstrom and Codega will begin with a discussion of sustainable forestry practices, tree selection, and management goals. The second part of the workshop will focus on harvest techniques and considerations and, hopefully, include a demonstration of felling, twitching, and milling a log for timber.

Participants are encouraged to bring a snack and water and dress in boots and warm clothes. Registration is required and is available at aldermere.org/forestry-workshop.

In June and July, we will be turning the harvested milled timbers into a small timber frame barn for equipment and tools in the Erickson Fields Teen Ag garden. Stay tuned for workshop dates to learn about timber frame joinery and raising the barn!
